Circular No 210

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 6 November 2005. Circular No. 210
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The great debate on Class 1963 or Class 1964
I still need more input to clear up all doubts.
The emails have been included in an attachment, but I still need the addresses, telephone number, whereabouts for those that do not have an email address.
I am extremely sorry that there are no photos for the classes in 1970+++.

I recall there was a Bernadine in our class, is he the same as Wallace?...
I guess we're all too stressed out to remember!......
All the best,
Howard.

Come on guys, I know there are better brains out there than mine, how about:
Aitken for #12?
Bernard Fontaine is correct for #2,
Piton rings a bell! Marninique or Gaudeloupe?
Wallace for #9?, doesn’t ring a bell.
Don, we sat O levels in Form IV in 62........................there after, no se?

Hello Tony,
Yes, I did my Form V, O Levels in 1963.
I did not know what I wanted to do with myself.
There was no careers guidance in those days.
I went back to try for better marks in 1964.
They did not improve.
I went off to London to do law that summer.
We have the following suggested names for this photo, probably of Form IV taken in 1962:
1 Michael Azar;
2 Bernard Fontaine;
3 ? Piton;
4 Michael de Verteuil;
5 Joel Blandin;
6 Edward Lloyd;
7 Simon Dacosta;
8 Enrique Castellas;
9 ? Wallace;
10 Don Mitchell;
11 Anthony Vieira;
12 ;
13 Douglas Agostini;
14 Ma Chook;
15 Humphry Ho Koon;
16 Stuart Henderson;
17 James Seheult.
We are missing information for 3, 9, and 14.
All the best,
Don

Cheers guys,
My last year at the mount was 64 I went back after 63 for a second try at GCE.
So I was in Form V with Mitchell senior and junior, did you go back in 64 Don?
I don't remember that.

Hello Ed,
Yes! Aitkin rings a bell.
I agree, Wallace does not ring at all.
We did sit one or two trial O Levels, History and something else perhaps, in Form IV.
But, our Form V, O Levels were the following year.
I sat Form V in both 1963 and 1964.
I remember it well perhaps because of the embarrassment of not doing better the second time around.

Hello Nigel,
I got two attachments. One is labelled MSB Class of 1964.doc (540 KB) and the other is labelled MSB Class of 1964.doc (391 bytes).
The second one I cannot open.
It sounds very small, so perhaps I can ignore it.
The first document contains 4 photos, two of the class and one each of Tony and me.
It seems to me that the first photo of essentially 2 rows of boys was taken in 1962 when we were in Form IV.
The second photo shows the boys one year older; I believe it was taken in 1963 when we were in Form V.
I have amended the labels accordingly and filled in the missing names.
Does anyone have any corrections or additions?
All the best,
Don

Selwin,
I have been following the correspondence between the guys; here is what we came up with between us i.e. Nigel Boos, Don Mitchell, Me, You and Howard.
I remembered all of the faces; putting a name to them is something else except for
#1. is Michael Azar AKA big Joe [better looking than I remember him]
#2 was a Venezuelan boy Fontaine
#3 is Piton,
#4 was a Trinidadian de Verteuil,
#5 is Joel Gui Blandin [of course]
#6 is Edward Lloyd AKA Selwin
#7. was Simon Da Costa
#8 is Enrique Castells AKA shovel hand,
#9 isn't that Wallace? his father was minister of Education in Trinidad at the time?
#10 is of course Don Mitchell AKA Box Head and that is me at
#11 AKA Terry WANG,
#12 I remember his face but no name comes to mind but he was Trinidadian,
#13 Herrera
#14 is Ma Chook,
#15 Ho Koon
#16 is a Henderson
#17 Seheult.

Ok, here is my take...........
1= Michael Azar (Big Joe),
2= ? Fontaine,
3=? a Venezuelan,
4= Michael de Verteuil,
5= Joel Blandin,
6= your's truly Edward Lloyd,
7= Simon da Costa (Barbados),
8=Enrique Castells,
9= ? a San Fernando boy, his dad was in the construction business.
10= Don Mitchell,
11= The one and only, Tony Vieira,
12= a POS boy,
13= Douglas Agostini,
14= Ma Chook,
15= Ho,
16=Stuart Henderson
17= James Seheult.
So we are still missing the names for #'s 3, 9 & 12.
The year was 1962, believe it or not as we were all in Form IV and I wasn't there the following year, Howard is correct in saying that the day boys were not there, as this was taken on a Sunday evening before dinner (or breakfast) at the new refectory up the hill.
All the best to you lads.

10 = Don,
12 =?,
13 = Herrera,
14 = Ma Chook?
15 = Ho Koon,

Hello all,
I am embarrassed to admit it.
I have no recollection after all these years what the names of most of my classmates were.
Was this photo of Form V 1964?
It could hardly have been.
I was in Form V in both the years 1963 and 1964, so I can get confused.
I thought Joe was in 1963.
MJ De Verteuil was in 1963.
My brother Gordon was in 1964 Form V, and he is not in the photo.
Tony was gone before 1964, and probably before 1963, yet he is in the photo.
The only ones I can identify with some certainty are:
1. Michael (Joe) Azar
4. Michael Joseph Basil De Verteuil
5. Joel Guy Blandin
7. David Da Costa
10. Don
11. Anthony Vieira
12.
13.
14.The ones I can guess are:
15. Howard Ho
16. ? Henderson
17. ? Seheult
I think this photo is probably of Form IV taken in 1962.
According to Ladislao's labelling system that would make it Form V of 1963 taken the previous year.
On the other hand, it might be of 1963.
All the best,
Don

Dear Friends,
Another newcomer to the Circulars, let us welcome Attila GYURIS, I am sure that his appearance is going to make his friends happy.
Now to the request for information or dues, here is the continuation, this time from Anguilla.
Also the 1963 classmates worry on the health of Michael Azar, in Portland Oregon.
Before I start, please take note that the best way to send photos to the Circular is by Kertesz11@yahoo.com.
Also please write me if you are not getting the Circulars with the attached photos. Maybe I missed or did not get your dues??
With that cleared, here is an email from a good friend.

Hello Ladislao,

This is Don Mitchell (1963 and 1964) acknowledging receipt with thanks of No. 200.
I would very much like to continue to receive the circulars and with the photos.
I have no difficulty downloading the attachments and they take no time at all with our broadband connection in Anguilla.

Just an update as requested:
I retired from the Bench in late 2004 and Maggie and I are now back in Anguilla.
We have reopened the house that had been shut up for the previous 5 years and have recovered our furniture from storage.
We are now enjoying pottering around and doing odd jobs.
Neither of us goes to the office as there is no office other than the ones we have set up in the house.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Don, Edward, Laszlo Check out the part in Red.
I am in Guyana Howard, preparing to launch the political party on the 24th October for next year's general elections, so I may not even go to the US in October this year as I usually do.
I may go with the Guys to raise money in New York and Toronto for the Campaign, but no more holidays this year.
Glad the hurricane missed you, so sad that the previous one did so much damage to the people of Louisiana!
Do you know that Georgetown the capital city of Guyana and most of the coastal plain where 90 percent of our population live is also below sea level.
Earlier this year 24.66 inches of rain fell in 5 days!! from the 14th January to the 18th January 2005 we were flooded in 6 feet of water for nearly two months 13 people died from Leptospirosis and other medical complications billions [Guyana dollars] in property was also lost.
As my gardener Fazal would say "everybody getting it good boss!"
Portland, Oregon? You are wide afield Howard what are you doing there?
Are you close to Michael Azar, the guy seems to have dropped off the planet!
No one has been able to raise him.
The last telephone number I have for him is 503-254-4101 give him a tinkle if you have the time................. whilst I was writing this to you I said to myself, what the hell I may as well call the guy myself, so I called his number it has been disconnected, Joe's silence now takes on a sinister aspect.
Is anyone in contact with the Michael Azar? the last time I spoke to him he was not well guys, so lets find out what happened shall we?
Does anyone know how to contact the real Big Joe in Trinidad?
He’s the older brother that owns the Mall near Port of Spain. I ran into him patrolling his empire in his Mercedes last year when on a visit to T&T.
It was a hilarious encounter, I saw him and I recognised him right away since, I used to see him working at Joseph's arcade when I went to town with Michael on Saturday's, so I asked him what he was doing patrolling the place, I even accused him of stalking some woman or the other since during the time when I was waiting for my wife [a notorious shopper] I saw him drive by several times looking around, he laughed and told me that he was actually working since he owned the place and he was inspecting it.
Tony
----------------------------------------------------------------------.
Tony,
good hearing from you! Houston fortunately was on the "good" side of Rita and sustained relatively little damage.
"Bacchanal" survived as well, estimated sustained winds in the marina was about 65 MPH.
The biggest impact to the Houston area is gasoline shortages, electricity outages daily as they balance the load (since capacity was lost) and finally, traffic...it'll take a couple more weeks to recover....
Are you in Guyana or US at present?....
..all the best,
Howard in Portland.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Here is a short BIO for the Abbey School website as requested.
Attached is a recent photo of me and my wife.

Attila N. GYURIS
I attended the Abbey School from Sep1964 to June 1969.
I went though all the grades from Prep “A” to Form V. (I did both Form II and Form III in one year, that’s why the years don’t match).
During my time at MSB I was active in the House of Saint Anthony, in the “Aqualads” swimming Team, and in the Scout Troop.
I was also a drummer in the Abbey Marching Band.
I remember my favourite activity during weekends at MSB was to climb the hill up to the “white stones” or escape into the “bush” behind the Refectory and build a “den”.
I had a pellet gun hidden in the bush with which I had many adventures.
After graduating Form V in 1969 I returned home to Caracas, Venezuela, where I had to redo all my Venezuelan “Bachillerato” equivalencies in order to be admitted into a Venezuelan University.
That took me a whole year in the Liceo San Jose in Los Teques.
After graduating a second time from this Venezuelan High School, I got admitted in 1971 into the “Universidad Simon Bolivar” in Caracas.
I graduated as a Chemical Engineer in 1977.
Then I emigrated to the US (California) where I attended UCLA for my Masters Degree.
During all this time I also attended Flight School and got all my professional aviation Pilot licenses (ATP and CFII in both airplanes and helicopters) and aviation Mechanic license (Airframe and Powerplant.)
After finishing my MBA, a Venezuelan oil company head hunter found me and gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse, so I returned to Venezuela then transferred to New York to work as a Project Engineer for Shell-Maraven for a little while (2 years) but didn’t like it.
My true calling was in aviation.
I resigned for good in 1982 and embarked on my aviation pilot career.
Along the years I have worked as a commercial pilot for several companies, among them Petroleum Helicopters in the Gulf and USAir out of NY.
In 1986 I got hired by the US Federal Government as a Law-Enforcement Officer / Agent.
At present I have been working for the last 20 years as a Federal Agent-Pilot for US Customs (Treasury Dept.), and recently got transferred to the new US Dept of Homeland Security as an Air Interdiction Agent – Pilot at a grade equivalent to Lt. Colonel.
Currently I fly 4 aircraft types: the C-550 Citation, B-200 King Air, the AS350 Astar and the UH60 Blackhawk.
I will be eligible for my 20-year federal full service retirement next year (2006), then I will probably look for other pilot adventures in the private sector.
I am happily married to Susy (she is from Ecuador) and I have a 5-old son, Alex.
My long-standing hobbies include sport skydiving, scuba-diving and long distance motorcycle touring.
I have finished the LA Marathon once (4.2 hours), never again!
I live in Southern California, so you’ all can come and visit.
My ph: is 951-780-4197. My email address: gyuris@yahoo.com.
Thanks to this wonderful internet, it’s great to be able to reconnect with all my old friends at the Mount.
I have several old b&w photos of my years at MSB.
I will email them as soon as I scan them and label them.

(Please send them, for resending. Ed.)

Dear Laszlo,
Thank you for sending me the circulars. I am enjoying them a lot. .
If I remember correctly, you visited the Abbey School with your mom in 1965 or so.
I think we met then.
You asked me what I wanted from town, and you bought me a bottle of ketchup.
I will never forget that.
Thanks.
I also remember that you were involved in building balsa-wood model airplanes, true?
I was a small boy in "Prep A" at the time, you had already graduated.
I graduated Form V in summer 1969.
I have several class pictures and also some pictures of the Mount Swim team "Aqualads".
They were taken by the Mount photographer, Fr. Benedict (woosh), if I remember correctly.
Would you like me to scan them and send them to you?
I see that your email address is Kaviation?
Are you working in aviation?.
I was formerly an airline pilot flying for US Air.
Now I am working (for the last 20 years) for the US Homeland Security Dept. as a Federal Agent / Pilot both in Helicopters and fixed wing.
Cheers,
