Circular No 203

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 24 of September 2005. Circular No. 203
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
In Circular No. 200 I let you know that I am going to make changes to the mailing of the Newsletter.
For those that would like to continue with the weekly ritual need to reply to the following parameters:
A) Do you want to continue to receive the Circulars?
B) Do you want to receive it with attachments (Photos)? This is because some have expressed concern that the attachments consume too much down load time for your local server.
C) Last and not all, either send your 50 words or check as per instructions at the end of the Circular. These words could be an account from your time at school, your critical review of the meals, teachers, etc. (This is a must).
D) For those that reply, I am sending the Circular with a new email address, to simplify the correspondence on my side. I hope that yahoo.com, is all right with you.
So back to emails; here is a compendium of emails from Cecil Ince

Dear Ladislao:
I was at a wedding in Port of Spain late nineties held at Ellerslie Park - the bride was a LEOTADU, a cousin of my wifes.
I saw Alan speaking to some friends, walked over and introduced myself.
We were not in the same form 1948-49 - he is younger than I and was in a lower form.
I could see Alan did not remember me - nearly 50 years had passed - but it was good to see him.
The last address I have of JOHN GORDON LANG is Telephone 263-3545. FAX: 295-9375.

Dear Ladislao:
I realized, only afterwords, that one important name in my class was omitted.
JOHN GORDON LANG, very popular and very respected for his maturity and intellect. He was from Grenada.
We've seen each other twice since I came to live in Barbados - during his visits here to see his sister, Kathleen, who still lives here.
When we last met in the early 90's (July l992) - he lived and worked in COLOMBIA - CALLE 38 NO. 79-26 BARRIO MODELIA - (FAX 295-9375) BOGOTA 6. His company is/was 'INVERSIONE 5 LANG YCIA S. EN C.

Hi guys,
Well, what a lovely surprise to open my e mail and find a picture of myself in your archives ( Class of 1966, third on the right of Mr Tyrell, back row ).
I'm Jerry Bain, # 80 ( it would really be nice to know how many people remember their numbers ).
My fondest memory of the Mount, was trying not to get a green soft drink after school, that special toast bread we had at breakfast, a teacher we called "Toots", the Serrao brothers, ( Small World 1 & 2 ), remember " Box head" ?.
I think I had one of the best teachers of the time, Mr. Ernie Tyrell, you know, I can still sign his initials.
I also remember that mango tree that used to look like a Christmas tree at night from all the cigarette smokers in the tree.
And Joan who worked in the kitchen (smile), the "siphon" gang.
St. Francis short pants with a white long sleeve shirt, (collar had to be up, shirt open 3 buttons ).
I've been living in Canada for the last 30 years now, married to Debbie, 2 daughters and a son.
As a matter of fact, those interested can check out my web site, just enter " Trinidad and Tobago in Canada" ( preferably on Yahoo ) and there you'll get the rest of the story.
Anyone know the whereabouts of Herman Vercrissen #77 ( Aruba), Cornel De Freitas, David Narine, Leon Alves or Bobby Wharton ? Drop me a line if you're still out there guys.
Regards to all,
Jerry Bain.
(I was #172, in the laundry. Ed.)

Pictures and Friends
'Education of a Trini'
It all started at Miss Smith's private School on Charles St. in Port of Spain at the tender age of four.
From then it was on to Miss Sylvester's in Diego Martin and then Mr. Roberts in Woodbrook.
Then I hit the big time, it was up to the Abbey School at Mt. St. Benedict with fellas like Robert Elias (Mighty Trini), Leon Alves, the Serrad Brothers (Small World 1 and 2) and the best track and field coach at the time, P.G. Wilson.
After four years at "The Prison on the Hill" as we called it, I was transferred to Fatima College to finish my schooling.
Now, that was memories, liming by Mr. Williams' Palour, fellas like Peter geofroy, Denis Niles, Garth Wills, Heyden Duprey (our goalie) and of course, that was the year we 'drafted' Everad Cummings to play "intercol" for us.
After completing three years at Fatima, I had to put in my "free labour" at the family owned business on Edward Street.
This is where I learnt what hard work is all about.
We had a great bunch of electricians there, Desmond St. Hill, Glen Loney to name a few.
Next door was Russ Archer Photo Studio.
Right across the road was Carl Baker, the tailor, and next door lived "the Taylors" who were bakers.... What a MIXED UP WORLD !
Anyway, the old man decided to send me off to Canada to study electronics, just about three months after becoming engaged (Surprise !!!) you could see that coming.
So it was two years at Radio College of Canada where I learnt how to repair televisions with tubes in it !
I'm still living in Canada now, still trying to figure what happened to all the tubes ?
'Special Memories'
The guys I used to race with at Wallerfield on Sundays... Pernell "Pee Wee" Welsh, Sidney Manhim, Silborn Clarke, Michael Munes, Ralph Thom, "Eggie" Gonzales to name a few. My liming buddies, Louis Hurdle, "Patches", Derick and Alan Viera, "Doodie" from Maracas. Ellingtonn "Jiggs" Griffith, Carlton Ahyee, Errol Rennie, Andre Penco. If any of you guys are still out there, DROP ME A LINE ! SPECIAL THANKS to my wife, Debbie, my two beautiful daughters, Alannah and Jenna and my son Jason.
I LOVE YOU ALL !

My Dear Ladislao,
Greetings in Jesus' Name and thanks a million for all the wonderful informational work that your circular are doing and providing for all of us. The “mount” remains and unforgettable institution in the lives of all of us who were fortunate to be part of its history.
These few notes, handwritten instead of being typed in a computer convey a sense of brevity in order to send this off to you quickly. So I do not intend to be lengthy here. But I want to embrace this opportunity to enclose the attached little donation to assist you in your wonderful work. It is my hope that it would emphasize several things; such as how much I appreciate your Circulars, also my tardiness or inability to contribute many articles.
I hope later on to do better in this regards), and my thanks for providing me with at least the e-mail of so many “old boys” whom I intend to write when more time allows me to do so.

I have been in close touch with Doctor David Bratt and his family in Trinidad. I also had the opportunity to meet with Mervyn Assam as well as Fr. Benedict and Brother Rupert. I am also in the process of purchasing a house in Trinidad, where, God willing I hope to spend time. Hoping to split my time between the U.S. and Trinidad.
I am also in close touch with Abbot John Pereira of the Mount. So busy as I am, I have not been completely out of the “loop”.

That’s all for now Ladislao send I ask our dear Lord to bless you and your family abundantly.
Your Lionel
(Formerly Brother Vincent)

I was delighted to receive your communication and pictures so I sat down and drafted such a long reply to you - somehow I seem to have lost it , did you by chance receive it? Please let me know, but, yes, you have found me, Lionel, should you get this, please let us keep in touch and reply as soon as possible –
Warmest regards –

My dear Ladislao,
--My God what a surprise!
Well yes you have found the Lionel Roberts.
I am so happy to hear from you, and hopefully by this means I could be in contact with so many of my former students and precious comrades. It seems that you have put together a newsletter which I would be most eager to receive. I have been hungry for news of as many of you as possible and now thanks to you this might be possible. I shall not be long in this communication, as I regard it as reintroduction to a whole generation of friends and former students which almost tragically was almost passing by. Suffice it to say that I visited the Mount in early January, and had lunch with the new Abbot and remaining monks. My wife Merlene was with me and what a thrill it was to us. Thoughts and fond memories came cascading back to me of those days of yore. On that occasion I met with Brother Rupert who gave me Isaias Farcheg´s address. I promptly wrote him, but to date have not been graced with a reply. I hope that I would more successful with!. In my next communication with you I hope to provide you with more information about me and my family.

God has been good to me and my family.
You will be happy to know that I remain within the bosom of the church; two years ago I celebrated my Silver Anniversary Of my Ordination as a Catholic Deacon.
But more of anon.
Ladislao how beautiful it is to hear from you please reply promptly.
God bless you and your family my friend.
NB:I will be sending you a picture of myself and my wife soon.
Love
(I would appreciate a photo. Ed.)

Dear Friends,
Here I am enclosing the emails that have been received from Christopher Knowles, now that he is retired, with some free time, maybe we can in the foreseeable future get additional lines from him.
The MSB ALUMNI is ready!!!
Can you send me a photo, Chris??? Alone, with the family, driver license, passport or as you would like to be preserved in the CD that I am preparing.

Dear Family and Friends,
Once again I am doing my thing at the last moment!
If you ever receive any holiday communication from me in advance of the occasion you would do well to question whether I am still the person that you know.
'Leopards' and 'spots' come to mind.
This year, Cindy and Charles and myself have been invited to spend the next three days with my good friend Monty and his family in wettest Norfolk, where part of the directions include 'bring tall boots, and when the road leads into the river just keep going - it is the only paved river in England'.
If this experience turns out to be 'exciting' then I will report in due course, otherwise you can assume that my imagination is overworking itself.
To you all, and all others who you know that I know and can pass this message to, I send from the three of us here our Greetings, and our wish that you and yours have a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous and Untroubled New Year.
With Love,
Christopher,
Cindy and Charles.

Subject: Reunion.

Dear Friends,
Much as I would like to attend, I cannot make it to the reunion.
I am living in England (and will be here for at least three years more, I think) and unfortunately cannot make a trip to TT this year.
Enjoy the event!
When it is over send commentaries and evidence!
I look forward to hearing about it.
Best Wishes to All, Very Old, Old, and Not So Old, Christopher Knowles, MSB 1955 to 1960.

Dear Ladislao,
Somehow I have not received No 80 and 81. Could you send me these items?
I have just received No 82 and the information about the difficulties with the web page. Maybe you can contact Anthony through his brothers Bernard and Claude, assuming that the Anthony in question is the one that I knew.
As for your question about the future life of the web page - I sincerely hope that Anthony or another Old Boy will be able to move it forward.
Maybe Graham, as he certainly has the skills, but I don't know about his other circumstances.
As for me, all my MSB stuff is in Trinidad and I am in England, (I had thought that I had some here, but no) so until I go home on holiday next year I will have only my faltering memory to rely on.
I know that this is not the helpful reply that you would have liked to see, but it is all I can say at the moment.
Best Regards,
Chris Knowles.
(Sorry no takers as yet. Ed.)

Caracas, 28 of June.

Dear Chris,
I am sorry that you have not received some of the circulars, I shall send them in due time.
Do you have a photo either from a trip, company photo, condecoration, knighthood, mug shot, etc. that you can send?
I hope that I can meet you when you get to TT.
Who knows?
The WEB page is still with no takers, although Don is after a solution and has offered to pay one year costs?
I would like to be also a one year contributor as soon as the future is clear.
So keep well and send the photo and any information that might make tears run.!!!
God Bless
Ladislao

Dear Friends and Family,
Today is Easter Sunday, and for many of us is a day similar to Christmas, that time of year when we remember all those who are and have been part of our lives and with whom we would like to share some time and company again.
This is not always possible, so the next best thing is just to say a quick Hello.
Well, Hello!
Some of you I know that I will see soon, some in a few months or years and some maybe not at all, but you all mean a great deal to me, and I wish you all the Blessings and Greetings of this day, and the continuing favour of the Almighty, difficult to appreciate sometimes, but always there for those of us who need it, and I suppose that just about covers everybody.
Much Love,
Christopher.

Dear Ladislao,
Happy Birthday!!
60 on Easter Sunday! A ready made weekend for celebration.
You share the day with Marcus Aurelius, Louis Napoleon III, George Takei (Sulu of Star Trek) and an infamous German Leader.
Well, they can't all be nice people.
I always thought that we were the same age, but now I see that I should have thought of you as an 'old boy'.
I am almost eleven months younger that you (First March 1944), but I am sure, judging from bits and pieces from your Mount Circulars, that you are far more fit and adventurous than I am.
Whenever we meet I am sure that I will be able to confirm that.
Seriously though, enjoy this significant milestone, keep well, and God's Blessings on you and yours.
Chris.

Ladislao,
Is this either Gerald Most or Csaba Jakobszen? The face is familiar.
I think if it was not one of my choices this person was at MSB in the late 50s, early 60s.
By the way, where does the first quiz appear?
I have not received No 76, so if possible please send it to me.

Dear Ladislao,
Thanks for the repeat of No 76.
After I received it I found the original, which I had filed in the wrong place.
You enquired about my sister Frances.
As you may remember, she was married to Graham Gonsalves, but unfortunately they parted company some fifteen or more years ago.
She is well, in TT, and is working for the administration office of the Catholic Church for the Antilles area, and is also a full time abuela, which she enjoys immensely.
She and Graham have three grandchildren (from daughter Joanna).
She and Graham keep in touch with one another.
For Quiz No 3, the people in the photo are:
Michael Howard, Ladislao Kertesz, Jose (Pepe) Braggio and Fr Cuthbert.
You didn't give the answer to No 2.
Please let us know.
Best Wishes,
Christopher.

To: Me London
Subject: Greetings for 2005.
Date: 1/4/2005 7:16:47 AM

Dear Family and Friends,
Greetings for 2005.
2004 has been an eventful year for me, with a short holiday in Normandy for the Bastille Day week with my old friend Alfred Bell, two visits to Trinidad (with one side trip to Tobago), a visit to Toronto with my sister Frances, and two weeks driving around southern England with Frances, who had not been here since the Sixties, seeing the sights and visiting family and friends, one of whom counted as several people because of a multiple personality scenario.
Very interesting, that one, if you can imagine the situation(s)!
The main reason for having all this free time is that at the end of September I retired from my employment of the last fifteen years with Tate and Lyle, the British sugar company, and for better or worse (time will tell) have been travelling and chilling out.
Now that 2005 is here it is time to get a new job and do productive things, so I have already signed up to do a course in Industrial Safety etc, a topic which is my latest interest, and is part of my experience over many years past.
In June, Cindy finished her degree at LSE and within days of the final exams was back home in Trinidad, such is the lure of the place!
She is working there at the moment, but may be returning to this country some time this year to work in this environment for a time.
Charles is nearly mid way through his undergraduate degree here, and doing well.
To you all, and all others who you know that I know and can pass this message to, especially Aunts Suzanne and Mille, and also Lisa, I send from the three of us our Greetings, and our wish that you and yours have had a Happy Christmas and will enjoy a Prosperous and Untroubled 2005.
With Love,
Christopher.
