Circular No 199

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 27 August 2005. Circular No. 199
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Due to comments that I have received, rest assured that I am not filtering your letters, giving priority to others, etc., but I am following this system:

1. When I get an email, I store it in the senders’ archives. Lately I am replying to let you know that I received your message.
2. If it is long, about one page, I immediately assign a Circular Number to it. Thus the Circular has a SEND date fixed to it.
3. The Circular is weekly so sometimes the reprinted email might take two to three months to be sent out, depending of the amount of emails you send.
4. In the past I tried to move numbers up and down but it caused confusion in my system, and most of all, TIME consuming.
5. With this system you might get odd numbers with advanced dates. This is because of my necessity to freeze the Circular numbers, and the urgency to inform you.
6. In 2013 when I am proposing to retire, I can make the Circulars more dynamic and be able to improve my system. As for now I can only promises that you are going to get a Circular per week.

Someone new but well remembered by his Class:

Hello Ladislao,
With delight I discovered the Abbey School Website(s) and your efforts to bring old boys together.
I have been trying to make contact but all efforts to do so get bounced back.
Attached is an account of my life after mount and some pictures that show the aging process...
I can send more, but do not want to overload this email.
Warm regards,
Norman Smith

Hello Ladislao,
Having a short go (guess) at the Class of 1964.
It looks like a snapshot out of 'The Boys on a break from the War -Singapore lets say!'
Christ, what a collection!
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6. (A) Clarke - Smart guy; Destined to become a doctor. Sat at the back right-hand corner of the Study Hall.
7. One of those 'Box-Heads' Mitchell - Most likely Gordon 'Alex' [Don't think it's you Don - Alex was always smartest in pose]
8. Paul Tadros (?) Lived in Couva.
9. (Christian?) Gurley [or Brendon]
10. Could be a Tang
11.
12 The American. Good friend of Don Mitchell. [Paul Zevan???]
13 - Can't recall this teacher yet. But must have been a tough bastard to be able to control this lot.
14.
15. Possibly Richard 'Jiggs' Anderson
16. John 'Johnny'/'Bram' Abraham - The Wild bush-man who made 'Brams Den' in the hills & Guitarest
17. (Guessing all this now) The resembelance to John (16 above) places him as his brother. [Some years after leaving MSB, I believe that this person died tragically by drowning while aqua-lunging in the caves in the Northern Hill - Coura/Valencia?!] Need to check 'Bram' on
that one.
18. A remarkably cool character.
19.
20.
21. Mervin Assam
22.
23. An ubiquitous Herrera. God knows which one though.
24. (This is a shot in the dark) Coonhow? (South Trinidad) A possible genius of philosophy, from what I recall. [Applicable to the person in the picture - Not the name indicated if incorrect]
25. Possible Galt
26. T T T T ?????? David Narrine's left hand. [Topping??]
27. None other than 'Nazi'
28.
29. Could it be: The Posing 'El Tigre' Himself? [Reported dead by suicide on Curacao] Poor fella - A bit overly strung; and was in love with....
30.
31. A short-ass lively head-case out of Pointe-a-Pierre, Trinidad. Can't recall your name bro, but were you a bunch of trouble! Hope you are well and still kicking strongly. (A de Bruin or something!)
Having read what I've just written + the comments added to the 1966 picture; seems that I have an avid obsession with death recall!
Not so strange how we all became brothers; strange how one wishes to recall their passing.
[Hoping however that I may be at least accurate.]
That's it for now
Cheers
Tobagojo

Sorry for this belated reply.

I would appreciate if when you have a snail mail contact with them that you mention the Circulars and the web page.
I looked up the web directory and no Costelloe has replied.

Caribbean Watercolours by David de De Boehmler,

Now living in Australia, David was born in Trinidad and has been a prolific artist for 30 years. He currently paints watercolours depicting life in the tropics, focussing on Trinidad and Togabo with its fun loving people. His paintings reflect the vibrant colours and scenes found throughout the Caribbean. He has exhibited his work in Australia, Canada, Trinidad and the United States

(Taken from the internet, sorry but David has not sent any news. Ed)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
David has been a prolific artist for the past 30 years, working in every medium. Over the last few years he has focused on watercolours. He has had exhibits in Australia, Canada, Trinidad and the United States. You can purchase some of his art from this site. We have a new page called the Gallery, where you can see a sampling of works that have sold. David also works as an illustrative sign painter and commercial artist, specializing in artistic signage, but he makes every effort to put his art first.

David and his lovely Australian wife, Joy, live on the south coast of Victoria, Australia. His current works depict life in the tropics - focussing on his homeland, the beautiful, tropical islands of Trinidad and Tobago, with its fun loving people. His paintings reflect the vibrant colours and scenes found on all the islands in the Caribbean and in many other tropical places - beaches, boats, vegetation, people, street and market scenes.

Dear Friends,
This time I have been a bit late with the Circulars. Thank you friends for your concern.
The lateness is due to travel, and because of having taken time helping out my daughter Victoria, with her Miss Aguasal Club pageant contest.
From what I have written in the past, my daughter Victoria (16) is a regular swimming champ at her school Colegio Humboldt (27:81 crawl) and doing quite well here in Venezuela, has just entered a Miss beauty pageant at a beach club where we are members.
The page is:
Now back to serious business.
The seriousness is that for some time there is no more information on Robert Lee in the Internet.

Ladislao,
My first day back at work
Re: Australia
This is a trip that I have been looking forward and planning for the longest while.
I did not find Richard McCartney in Australia.
What happened was a near disaster.
On my second day upon arriving in Australia, I got a heart attack.
I spent my first week in the Hospital and the following 2 weeks fighting with the airline to allow me to fly back to Canada.
The view of the city from the hospital was splendid.
Recovering at Cogee and Bondi Beach was fun.
It would have been much better if I didn't have the heart attack.
Bondi Beach is probably the world's largest collection of blondes.
Quite a number of the girls were topless on the beach in the mild spring weather.
I can imagine what would happen in the Summer.
I did locate Richard McCartney in New Zealand through the help of Leary O'Connor in Australia.
