Circular No 190

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I. Caracas, 23 of June 2005. Circular No. 190

Dear Friends,

Here I am enclosing communication from Peter Gittens, who is in Louisiana.
Maybe Salvador can contact him personally, Telf. (504)398-2142.
Also it would be nice for him to have a call from Deacon Lionel Roberts who is in St. Petersburg Fla.

Dear Ladislao,
Sorry about the delay in replying to your e-mail.
The last few days were very hectic and disruptive with a lot of travel to other cites, which caused me to neglect e-mail correspondence.
My exit year from the Abbey School was 1961.
It seems so long ago, that I have forgotten a lot of the people I was in class with.
Unfortunately, I have not kept in touch with any one.
When he was alive, I would run into ERNEST CASTILLO in Toronto, and now and then some one would mention the name of Robert Elias, and his music.
I was in class with ROBERT ELIAS.
I may have some old black and white pictures at my house in London, Ontario.
When next I am in Canada I will rummage through them so see what I can find, and will certainly scan file them to you.
Meanwhile, thanks for the Circulars.
Sincerely,
Peter Gittens

(It would be nice to have Robert Elias, E-mail address. Ed.)

Greetings, fellow alumni of the Abbey School:
I attended the Abbey School from 1956-1961.
I was one of the (junior) seminarians.
I did not become a priest, but I was ordained a permanent deacon in 1984.
From 1970 to 2001 I worked in Canada in Catholic Education both in the Hamilton and
Guelph areas.
I retired in 2001 and moved to warn and spicy Louisiana, only to become busier than in my previous life in Ontario.
Today I live in Harvey, Louisiana (a suburb of New Orleans), and work full-time as an associate professor of Philosophy and Theology at Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans, Louisiana.
I also teach Philosophy at the local Seminary (Notre Dame Seminary) in New Orleans.
It was good to view the photos on the web pages, rekindling many fond memories of some of our "beloved" Benedictine teachers.
Sincere best wishes to all,
Peter Gittens.

Dear Ladislao,
This picture of Fr. Ildefonse was taken in front of the Seminary.
You may recall that Fr. Ildefonse was the rector of the Seminry, as well the Scout Master, and teacher of Latin, Geography, History, and Woodworking.
After the new Seminary was opened in 1961, Fr. Ildefonse got a Lambretta scooter as his means of transportation from the Seminary to the Abbey School and to the Monastery.
In this picture he is learning to ride his new motor bike.
This picture was taken either in 1961 or 1962.
Sorry, I do not have other pictures at the present time.
Yes, I have been receiving the circulars for the past year on my work e-mail address which is pgittens@olhcc.edu. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Peter Gittens.

Dear Peter,
Thank you for the photo.
Fond memories.
Are there more in that old card board box, or album.
What would be the story for the photo?
I hate to make up stories on photos, I might not get the feeling through.
Have you received the circulars?
God Bless

Dear Ladislao,

After an absence of almost 20 years I recently got re-involved in two of my passions (Motorsport and Photography)

It happened quite by accident, 2 years ago I was in Curacao on my Honeymoon and I decided to buy a camera. New wifey was upset that I was buying a complicated thing-a-mig and wanted me to buy a point and shoot. So I snuck out of Honeymoon bed early one morning and went out to purchase a Minolta Dimage 7i.

Shortly after that, I met some people currently in Motorsport and I was telling them that after I had stopped racing, I used to do photography. The suggested that I come back, which I was reluctant to do because I knew that Autorsport to me is like Rum to a chronic alcoholic or marijuana to a space cadet.

But I went, and things have snowballed from there in the two years. 4 cameras and a lot of lenses and equipment.

I am getting a lot of work published in magazines and on the web. I also manage to sell some for advertising.

Unfortunately I am also getting a lot of work stolen. I recently picked up a Go-Kart Magazine from Jamaica to see 10 of my photographs in it. But that’s the nature of the beast.

Last time I was at Wallerfield (Motor racing Circuit), I was up in the bush at the top corner where I spend a lot of time alone. Well not alone, I usually have a stray dog, a few cobeaux and the odd vagrant for company. And I recalled when I was at Mount, the many Sundays I was stuck up there and I knew there was motor racing at Wallerfield, and while Mount was great for those of you that liked football, cricket and athletics, it was torture for me who only wanted to be in the 1st Boca Diving or at a race track.

While covering the power boat event a few months ago, I was told by officials that I was being put on Mr. Taylor’s boat.

I felt a bit odd going on a stranger’s boat and unlike motorsport I really don’t know the Powerboat people. Also as an avid sailor, we tend to have some not to nice thing to say about the powerboat people.

I was shocked and surprised when I was introduced to Mr. Taylor. It was Roger Taylor. I had not seen him in 30 years. He was one of the few people I used to lime with at Mount. We used to get up to some pretty neat pranks together. Usually finding ways to pay back the bully types. I recalled that we once bought some Carib beer, carefully opened the bottles. Drank ½, then filled them up with piss and resold them to other guys.

Roger now drinks bloody marys. Wonder what he substitutes in them……………..haha.

There is a pic of him and wife in the powerboat page

The only 2 people from Mount that I know are involved with motorsport are David Pampellone, who you are familiar with and a V Ramsing who was a day boy in our time.

Attached are some of the web links with work

The photos can be seen at: http://www.trinituner.com

(Please send in information on V Ramsing. Ed.)

I noted with interest the email from Llewelyn Mac Intosh.
Usually referred to as "Mackie".
He was an excellent teacher, though not the most favourite because he also had the role of "Dean of Discipline" which was not popular when he brought out the "pesse" and doled out licks to those who may have (or not) deserved it.
The son of the lawyer Theodore Guearra, was always getting licks (can't remember his first name).

PART I of various to be published by Ladislao Kertesz. (my 50 words instead of a check)
Effectively today the school does not look the same as when I was there.
I am going to write a short resume leading to my stay that started in 1955.
I went to the Abbey School because of concerns by my parents of the need to learn English.
My father was a friend of Matias Fedak´s father who recommended the school.
My father got my uncle interested and I was enrolled in their idea.
I was told of the impending trip in July 1955 after I finished primary school here in Caracas.
I remember starting to make a list of English words that I knew; they did not number more than 25 if my memory is right.
No problem, I did not know that in TT people spoke only English with a few exceptions.
I was with the expectations of a treat, an airplane flight of over an hour, since I had never been on an airplane before.
The airplane was a Viking, if I find a photo in the future I shall include it, specially for you pilots.
The day of the flight approached without a sweat, I had no way of knowing what the future had for me. I have tried to think of my bravery but I believe that the opportunity for a flight overwhelmed reason.
The trip was long enough at about 10000 feet, I could see people walking in the streets and vehicles on the road.
Then suddenly the announcement that we were about to land.
Here suddenly I got nervous, as my parents were not close, etc.
I disembarked the airplane and walked apprehensively towards the terminal building together with the rest of the passengers.
I had in my hand a slip of paper with my future address, The Abbey School and the contact. Fr. Bernard,
Suddenly I saw a white robed person and three kids, I only remember that it was Bro. Vincent, Manuel Prada and two other kids.
The emigration part was fast and off we went to the school, which was clearly seen at the distance, just as today, a monument.
I had arrived a week early, which was good as I met all the priest and the Venezuelan boys with whom friendship was obvious, only then I realized that there was a language problem.
The rest of the story shall be posted in a new circular. I believe in equal time.
(Can anyone write their experiences as to the first day?? Ed.)

Dear Friends

Here is a brief recount of the Darwent Clan, I hope that this might bring together friends of those great times at the Mount.

By the way Nigel has a web page on and about happenings at Point Fortin, that you might find interesting to look at.

Subject: Darwents that went to the Mount.

HI Ladislao,

I shall introduce myself first and give some information of my stay at the Mount.

I am Peter Darwent having started my schooling at the Mount in 1947 as I lived in the deep South - Point Fortin, my father having worked for Shell Oil.

When my father retired from Shell in 1950 I left the Mount and became a day boy at Fatima Collage in Port of Spain.

Nigel had e-mailed me a number of months ago asking for information on the Darwents who went to the Mount.

The ones that I am sure about are; Walter (my brother) lives in Trinidad and can be e-mailed at his son dadarwent@yahoo.co.uk .

John (cousin) lives in the USA at john_darwent@hotmail.com

Michael (cousin) lives in the USA can be contacted at his daughter lisatriniusa@aol.com
Roger Darwent as Nigel said in one of his e-mails died in the USA a few year ago.

The eldest of my cousins Donald lives in Canada and can be contacted at his son lesdar@shaw.ca but we do not think that he went to the Mount.

I worked in Trinidad for Trinidad Oilfield Services from 1956-1962 when they were bought out by Dowell Schlumberger.

I was transferred out of Trinidad in 1965 to Libya, then in 1967 to Kuwait, Bahrain in 1969 for 6 months then back to Kuwait.

Went to Nigeria in 1971 for two years then Great Yarmouth in 1973 for two years, Iran in 1975 for three years and Singapore in 1978 for six months then Sumatra for two years and Jakarta in 1980 for three years.

In 1984 I was transferred out of their oilfield operations and then as manager into the purchasing and shipping company in Holland then in 1987 I went to Belgium to open another purchasing and pricing office.

I was pensioned off in 1989 and have enjoyed 15 years of good living visiting other parts of the world that I had not worked in.

We live in the UK from April to December each year and then spend a very enjoyable three months in Trinidad.

Before coming to Trinidad this year we spent 2 months in Australia and New Zealand.

I met a number of old boys in Perth and will give you another e-mail when I get back to the UK with details.

My brother gave me the attached picture which was taken between 1947 and 1949.

If you do not already have it would be great fun to see how many of the boys can be identified and how many are on you mailing list.

I think that I may have some more pictures taken in my time at the Mount and when I return to the UK I will send some to you if I find any.

Thanks for the Newsletters that you have been sending me.

Best regards Peter.

Newsletter Abbey April 1983.

Dear Friends

We have your news: good: also that you are well and happy: benissimo:.

It’s been a long time you have heard from us.

Nonetheless, we’ve not forgotten you.

Since I started teaching at the Abbey College; writing the Abbey news has became difficult.

The days are short and much work has to be done.

I suppose we all have the same complaint.

Anyway, this short letter assures you of our prayers and promise to keep you informed of the events here.

We keep you noted in our prayer-list.

The Lord’s face has been upon us over the past months as He recalled his friends home.

Seven of our brethren have died; including our recent brother, Fr. Leo whose card is enclosed with this letter.

Pray for him and the others.

Fr. Anselm van der Heijdt (died 3/9/81), Fr. William Boers (died 29/9/81), Fr. Bede Theunissen (died 26/12/81), Bro Gabriel Mokveld (died 18/7/82), Fr. Radbod van den Plas (died 27/8/82), Fr. Gualbert van den Plas (died 13/10/82) and Fr. Leo va Leeuven whom we mentioned earlier (died 31/1/83).

Much as we rejoice and pray that the Lord may grant them their eternal rewards; in this time of our history, we pray for Discernment in learning what the Lord has to say to me. Keep us in your prayers.

January:

1/1/83: Fidel Rampersad (22) born on 24th April 1960, from Chaguaramas, entered the Abbey as a postulant to the monastic way.

He was a past student of the Abbey Collage and had been studying construction.

11/1/83: The abbey extension was blessed by the Abbot at 7:45pm. A small ceremony took place in the Reception Room.

Afterwards, the community gathered for a cocktail in the balustrade.

Work on the extension had begun on the 7/4/81 and was completed by Christmas of 1982.

The rooms are now occupied by the brethren who were living in the Retreat House annexe since 1980.

14/1/83: Abbot Hilderbrand Greene celebrated his 25th anniversary of monastic profession.

Apart from a simple renewal ceremony on the morning, the community rejoiced with him in festive style on the 17/1/83.

Bro. Ronald organized a concert entitled: “Ever-Greene” during which the brethren performed, sang, and acted using the theme of “green” evoking hope and renewal in his monastic life.

The Sunday evening recreation was pitched with excitement and fun.

21/1/83: Bro. Dennis, his blood-brother, Derek and a friend, Bernard began work on the Abbey wall which separates the car park and the gardens.

Bro Francis camped with his scouts that weekend.

February:

Miss Marcus is semi retired, working in the Abbey Library with Fr. Ildefons.

12/2/83: 80 Pentecostals spent the Carnival weekend here, living in the College dormitory.

13/2/83: The Altar ladies and Bro. Harold organized a Creole breakfast underneath the Bell tower.

The project aimed at raising funds for the Abbey and was quite successful..

Eight of the brethren spent Carnival days at the Mayaro Beach.

15/2/83: Fr. Christopher, former parish priest of Carapichaima, returned to the Abbey from holidaying in his hometown in Holland and following a refresher course in Rome.

He has been in the parish for the past 11 years.

19/2/83: Bro. Paschal, our choirmaster, held a musical seminar for Lent.

A considerable number of young people involved in various roles in the parishes gathered in the Abbey Church.

22/2/83: Fr. Bernard, former Abbot of our abbey, who suffered much with a stroke and burns, visited a specialist to examine his legs.

He is reacting favourably to the new medication.

The Abbot and 3 monks attended a requiem Mass for Fr. Leo at the La Romain Church.

Archbishop Anthony Pantin officiated.

25/2/83: Fr. Ildefons attended a Charismatic conference in Curacao.

March:

Fr. Maurus went to St. Lucia ministering to the Benedictine nuns in that island.

Abbot Hilderbrand preached and conducted retreats in 3 parishes: Chaguanas where Fr Ignatius OSB is parish priest, Couva where Fr. John OSB is parish priest and in the church of St. John´s where Fr. Maurus was stationed.

At Home: Fr. Augustine conducted the Pentecostal services for the community.

Prior Vincent, Sub-prior Joseph and Bro Ronald led talks during the Thursdays of Lent.

For the Easter Virgil, a sizeable group of our brethren was home.

Frs. Benedict and Adelbert celebrated services in the parishes of Chaguanas and St. John’s (St. Peter’s Home).

Fr. Christopher conducted his first Easter Services in St. John’s.

April:

1/4/83: Radio 610 broadcasted the Good Friday services for the nation.

2/4/83: Mr. Fidel Rampersad entered the novitiate.

After the morning services, we proceeded to the new Reception Room where a short, intimate ceremony was conducted by the Abbot.

School reopens on the 18/4/83 for those of us who teach at the Abbey College or St. Bede´s Vocational or Regional Seminary.

We would like to wish you many Easter greetings filled with newness.

“Truly, there’s no joy on earth quite so precious to me. And my heart has no greater reward that the wonderful joy that comes into my heart when I go to the house of the Lord”.

It is said "eat modus in rebus" so I must be going now or as the Jamaican would say: “ah gone to meh yard””.

De profundis,

Bro. Ronald OSB

Hello Ladislao,

First of all thanks a lot for having sent me various "Mount" circulars.

I've enjoyed reading every one of them and now I would like to participate more actively in the MSB circular mailing.

If you wish I can also send you in the near future a short rundown of my activities since I left Mount (1957) and since I left Caracas (1975).

I have had, of course, contact to various Mount boys during all these years, and as I had been flying over regularly to Caracas till the year 2000 (when my mother died).

I've had the luck to be able to meet personally many of my old and closest friends as Urbano de Fedak, Azier Atela , Isaias Farcheg, Ricardo Figuera, Roberto Lipavsky, Pedro Castro etc.

Now that I haven't been travelling to Venezuela for a couple of years this new communication method is in a way an excellent substitute to keep in touch with the old gang.

Besides that, now I'll have more time available for personal pleasures of this kind, first of all because my children have now become independent; my daughter Christine, 25 got married in June and my oldest son Gabor, 31 has set up his own company in Budapest and my youngest son Peter, 29 graduated from the University of Heidelberg.

Secondly, I'll be retiring at the end of May 2003 and right after we'll be moving to Spain, (next to Valencia) where we had bought an apartment some years ago.

I am closely following with anxiety the daily happenings of Venezuela and am very worried about what the future will bring.

Over here it's no cake walk either but nothing comparable to what you're having over there.

I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year and please count on me for the future.

If you have any kind of "collective e-mail address list" of the Mount boys I'll be much obliged if you send it to me.

Un abrazo

Csaba

Hi Ladislao,

First of all thanks a million for your constant and substantial flow of good calibre "MSB Information"

I appreciated it a lot and sorry that up to now I didn't have time to contribute to it.

As far as that goes, on one of the lists you have "Joel Blandin" RIP ???

Unfortunately I can confirm that.

Joel Blandin died in Poitier, France where he had been for a long time export manager of the chamber of commerce; at that time, I had been in close contact with him.

As far as I'm concerned I'll be going off-line as far as this e-mail is concerned on Tuesday, June 10, as we're moving for good to Spain.

As far as I get an e-mail connection I'll let you know.

Cheerio till then

Hello Ladislao,

At last I'm online again!

As I had let you know some months ago it had been our intention to move to Spain for good and we'd bought an apartment in the vicinity of Valencia more than 6 years ago.

Now, thank God, we are finally here and enjoying fully the benefits of this subtropical climate which cannot be compared to the weather of central Europe.

I am actually in a kind of a "pre-retirement" stage and will retire officially in May 2004 when I'll be 65 years old.

Right now, my wife and I are pretty busy with all the changes we want to realise in the apartment, but in a month or two we should have most of these things done and then I¡¯ll have more time to engage in more frequent communication with you and the "Mount boys".

As far as personal achievements go, I can brag about the fact that in August I've also become grandfather as my daughter Christine bore a son!

I'll be very grateful if you start sending me again all the circulars which you do so well and with which you contribute so much to help so many of us to re-establish contact with so many dear old friends.

Dear Ladislao,

I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in spite of all the adversities you are having locally at the time.

Thank you for your beautiful Christmas Card with music and all; I could open it without any problem.

Please keep up the good work with the Mount Boys' Circular which you are doing so well.

I'm sure that it has helped to re-establish many old friendships among the old MSB bunch.

As you published my message of late, Ian Cope, of whom I hadn't even heard since 1957, saw my address and we started corresponding: this is just great.

I'll also write Maroth de Marothy whose e-mail address I found in your Circular.

Un abrazo muy fuerte,

Csaba

Hello Ladislao,

Sorry for the delay to answer you regarding this picture; I'm flying to Germany today to attend the baptism of my grandson.

As soon as I'm back (coming Wednesday) I'll send you the names (of the ones I know) appearing on the picture.

I know the names of most of the boarders.

As far as other pictures go, I have one of the Class of 1956.

I¡¯ll get it scanned and I'll send it to you in the coming weeks.

Wish you and your family a happy New Year and good health.

Un abrazo

Csaba

Dear Csaba

I am glad that you have been able to correspond with your friends.

I would like you to help me with the class photo, please place names on the faces.

Also send me photos if you still keep any for the bunch.

How about the scouting days. Badges??

I hope we can keep on going thru 2004.

Have a prosperous and healthy new year.

God Bless

Ladislao

Csaba,

What actually happened was that just before I called, lightning hit next to my house and knocked out my computer cable modem.

I noticed that my emails would not go out and after checking I realized what had happened. It took me a couple of days to replace it.

Christian and I occasionally bombard Urbano, Manual and Peter with dirty jokes.

Manuel and Brian answer and sometimes send the ubiquitous anti-Chavez news.

Even though I copied Peter De Morvay here I believe that his Lasmo email address has changed since I haven't heard from him lately.

Every so often we hear from Urbano but he's always travelling and/or is too busy working so we don¡¯t hear from him as much as we would like to.

Fortunately, Ladislao keeps us updated with the Mount boy newsletter.

Un abrazo,

Donald

Hi Donald,

Thanks for your call of the other day and your e-mail.

Must have been a hell of a sandstorm when you called as the e-mail you'd mentioned arrived 2 days later.

I¡¯ll answer you in more detail when I get back from Germany as I'm flying up to Frankfurt right now for 5 days to attend the baptism of my grandchild.

Just got an e-mail from Urbano; he is at the time in Caracas.

Un abrazo

Hola Csaba:

First of all, I want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2004.

I would like to apologize for my late reply, and today I'm finally getting around to answering my emails from over two weeks ago.

I'm glad that you sent me this e-mail because your last address didn't seem to be working.

We are all just fine here in Baton Rouge and decided to stay home for the holidays this year for the first time in five years.

We had been rotating between Miami where my daughter Daniela lives and Colorado where my wife's parents have a ski place.

We live at 120 Seyburn Dr., Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808.

My home phone is 225 766.2243 and my office phone at Louisiana State University where I work is (225) 578.4538.

I sure hope that during your visit to the USA next year you can stop by for a visit.

We have a small guest room for friends that visit us.

You are probably in contact with Brian and Christian, but just in case I've copied them here so that you'll be in touch with all of us.

After you've settled into your place in Valencia we may come to visit you.

I sure envy you since I would also love to retire in Spain.

However, for us most of Europe and in particular Spain is way too expensive.

For this reason, I occasionally play the lottery and the powerball to see I can win a few million $.

If this ever happens you'll surely have me as a neighbour the next day.

By the way, you just beat me by a few months since I will also be a grandfather in January or February since my oldest daughter will be having a boy.

Well, Csaba best wishes to all.

Un abrazo,

Donald

Hello Donald,

Have you received this e-mail of mine in November??

Please reply

Best regards

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Donald,

First of all I wish to let you know that at long last I am online again.

We moved in June from Germany to Spain and since then we are fully enjoying this mild Mediterranean climate.

The move was naturally no cakewalk and we are still in the process of renewal, i.e. of adapting our apartment to our requirements.

This is no easy task here as you have to be chasing the electricians, the plumbers, etc etc and beg them to do something for you.

The reason for this is that at the time there is a construction-boom in Spain as they have never had before.

They are raising over 800.000 houses and apartments per year and the prices are skyrocketing (Thank God, we bought our apartment 7 years ago as we could hardly afford to buy something at the actual price level.)

Anyway, in a couple of weeks we should be finished with all this and then we can hopefully start to relax and to plan the trips we wish to undertake.

(Right now we couldn't undertake any trips anyway, as I am not officially retired as yet but am classified as unemployed in Germany until May 2004 when I'll be 65 years old and therefore I should be permanently in Germany.)

Next year, most probably in the late summer or in autumn we would like to make a big calibre USA - Canada trip to visit Nova Scotia, where I haven't been since I left Saint Mary's University in 1963, then Windsor (Ontario) and Detroit area where my cousins live and then most probably New York, North Carolina (to visit David Ames), Cleveland (Hungarian friends) and Houston (to visit Bill Groeschel whom you surely remember from PLC and with whom I've always been in touch.

He also visited us with his family in Germany) AND naturally I would also like to see you after all these years.

Please send me your phone numbers (home and office) as with the move to Spain a couple of things have been misplaced and I can't find the e-mail in which you'd sent them.

I hope you'll keep sending me all the corny and not corny jokes; I really enjoyed some of them very much and passed them on to other friends.

Un abrazo fuerte to you and your loved ones

Csaba

P.S. The big change with me is that since August 16, I am grandfather. Asi que mucho respeto !
